Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) is an international Bible study organization with over 1,000 classes meeting weekly in cities across the globe. The Grand Rapids Evening Men’s class meets right here at Thornapple on Tuesday nights from September through May. (There are also women’s classes that meet at different churches during the day and in the evening in the Grand Rapids area, and a Young Adults class that meets on Tuesday nights at First Evangelical Covenant Church.). You can learn more about BSF here.
Each week, you receive a lesson that is divided into six sections for daily personal study. These completed lessons are then reviewed in a small group (10-15 men) setting on Tuesday night. Following the small group time, all men gather in the sanctuary to listen to a lecture on the whole lesson. Many Thornapple men currently attend BSF, including Dick Townley, Les Ruster, Jim Vanderwall, Steve Vanderwall, Brian Downs, Howard Veltman and John McLaughlin. Feel free to talk to any of these men about the study.
Most adult classes offer a children’s program as well; the program for children at the Tuesday night men’s class is for kids in kindergarten through high school. The children study the same passages as the adults each week, which can lead to meaningful family discussions.
BSF starts each fall on a Tuesday in mid September. The study topic changes each year. The class begins at 6:55pm, and typically wraps up at 8:45pm. On your first night, you will be given an introduction to BSF and can fill out a registration. If you want to enroll children in the program, we ask that you not bring the children until you have heard from the program supervisor that there is a spot for them (so that we can maintain the appropriate adult-to-child ratios). The dress code is “come as you are.” There is no cost to participate in BSF; offering plates are set out each evening for participants to contribute as they are able and feel led.
